The Ambassador of France to Uganda, Virgine Leroy, has called for stronger efforts to ensure women and girls across Uganda can access justice, urging governments and development partners to translate commitments into practical results.

Leroy made the remarks during the national celebrations marking International Women’s Day 2026 held at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala on Sunday.

Speaking under the national theme, “Scaling up investment to accelerate access to justice for women and girls across Uganda,” the ambassador said International Women’s Day should serve not only as a moment of celebration but also a time for reflection and renewed commitment to advancing women’s rights.

She noted that the global theme for the 2026 celebrations, “Giving to Gain,” highlights the importance of investing in initiatives that create real opportunities for women and girls.

“Access to justice is not a privilege. It is a fundamental right that must be accessible, affordable, and responsive in all regions of Uganda and across the globe,” Leroy said.

She said European partners, with France among the leading supporters, remain committed to working with Uganda’s institutions and civil society organisations to advance gender equality.

“Empowering women and girls is a cornerstone of sustainable development,” Leroy added.

The Gender Development Partners Group also commended Uganda for efforts to strengthen legal and policy frameworks aimed at promoting gender equality and protecting the rights of women and girls.

The group, however, emphasised the need for sustained investment and cooperation between government, development partners and civil society to ensure that progress in gender equality leads to measurable improvements in the lives of women and girls.

This year’s national commemoration brought together government officials, civil society organisations, development partners and members of the public to reflect on achievements made in promoting gender equality while identifying areas requiring further investment to accelerate access to justice for women and girls across the country.
